DODGE CITY — Derby sliced a 3-run deficit to 9-8 when Great Bend pitcher Chayla Prendergast recorded the final three outs to surprise 6A Derby. Derby (12-2) owns the second-best record in 6A West.
Great Bend routed Wichita Northwest 18-3 to finish 2-2 at Dodge City's Softball Classic. Great Bend (13-3, 6-0 WAC) plays at defending champion Hays (5-5, 4-0 WAC) Tuesday.
"We bounced back big-time," said Great Bend coach Carrie Minton. "It was exciting. It was a lot of fun. We pounded out hits. We faced good competition. knew we had to be at the top of our game."
PANTHERS 9, DERBY 8 (G1) — Derby's Karlie Demel doubled home Kelby Clingan and scored on an error for a 9-8 score. Prendergast (7-1, 4.42 ERA) retired Jersey Ramirez, Addy Canfield and Carsen Carpenter to end the game.
The Panthers led 9-6 when Camdyn Post singled home Denver Ringo and Braelyn Turner. Post scored on DeShawnna Bryant's seventh-inning single. Post singled four times. The Panthers tagged Derby starter Canfield (8-0) for six runs and 11 hits.
Bryant, Kamryn Koelsch and Prendergast all drove home two runs.
Derby hit five doubles. Canfield and Carpenter each drove home two runs. Reagan Jackson and Kyler Demel each drove in a run.
PANTHERS 18, WICHITA NW 3 (G2) — Great Bend's Kya Behr doubled three times and drove home four runs with four hits. Alyssa McCauley drilled a 3-run homer to key a 10-run first inning.
Paige Thexton and Bryant each drove in two runs. Camdyn Post, Kamryn Koelsch and Katherine Mazouch each drove home one run. Panther pitcher Braelyn Turner (4-2, 3.25 ERA) earned the victory.
After 16 games, Behr is batting .583 (35 for 60) and Bryant is hitting .500 (28 for 56).
