Hutchinson High's pitchers dominated on the mound and at the plate.
The Salthawks swept Great Bend 6-3 and 9-3 behind the hitting and pitching of Riley Lusk and Jayden Rehlander. The Panthers (2-16) are scheduled to play Hays Thomas More Prep Thursday at Brit Spaugh Park.
HUTCHINSON 6, PANTHERS 3 (G1) – Great Bend pitcher Jordan Turner was backed up by spectacular defense in a hard-luck 6-3 loss to Hutchinson High Tuesday.
Right fielder Brooke McReynolds made a dazzling catch. Second baseman Halle Post and first baseman Analiz Rivas delivered solid defensive p0lays.. Shortstop Paige Thexton turned a line drive into a double play.
But Hutchinson's Riley Lusk ripped a grand slam homer to spark the Salthawks past Great Bend 6-3 in Tuesday's opener. Turner had Lusk off balance with a clever changeup for a ball on an 0-2 count. Lusk hit Turner's next-pitch fastball over the centerfield fence for a 4-1 lead.
The Salthawks clipped two infield hits off Panther gloves in the 4-run third inning. Rivas' attempt at a force play hit baserunner Madalynn Hernandez in the back and gave the Salthawks an extra out. Lusk took advantage.
DeShawna Bryant scored the Panthers' first run on a throwing error by catcher Jayden Rehlander. Hutchinson's Marciano scored on Lilliana Wilson's fourth-inning single for a 5-1 lead.
Halle Post tripled and scored on Thexton's sixth-inning groundball. Hutchinson pitcher Lusk retired Rivas and McReynolds to strand two runners. Hutchinson's Jailyn Miller tripled and scored on Karcin Regier's groundball for a 6-2 lead. Lauryn Davis scored on Bre Ridgeway's seventh-inning double.
HUTCHINSON 9, PANTHERS 3 (G2) – Rehlander hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and homer and drove in four runs. Rehlander struck out three batters and yielded two earned runs. Lusk hit her second homer of the twin bill.
The Panthers scratched out three runs. Bryant singled home Rylee Prilling in the first inning. McReynolds scored on Ridgeway's second-inning sacrifice fly. McReynold doubled and scored on a seventh-inning error. Thexton and McReynolds each delivered two hits.
