Panther swimmers sweep two events

GARDEN CITY — The Garden City girls outscored Great Bend 404-352 for their first home swimming victory in 17 seasons over the Panthers. Great Bend’s girls have swept the past 17 Western Athletic Conference swimming championships.

Great Bend won two events. The Panthers won the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:19.09) with Aubrey Snapp, Ruth Williams, Zoe Jerke and Emilee Hall competing.

Panther Ellyson Somers won the 100-yard butterfly (1:12.86) and Ruth Williams placed runner-up (1:12.93). Emilee Hall placed runner-up in the 200 freestyle (2:24.92) and 500 freestyle (6:32.18). Zoe Jerke placed second in the 50 freestyle (28.55).

The Panthers 200-medley relay placed second (2:08.88) with Zoe Jerke, Ellyson Somers, Ruth Williams and Emilee Hall competing.

Garden City’s 200-yard medley relay team of Payton Tull, Avery Meng, Paige Chappel and Ashleigh Chappel clocked a state qualifying time of 2:04.43, 2.36 seconds under the state qualifying standard of 2:06.79. Meng and Paige Chappel won all four events they entered.
