Panther boys outshoot Dodge City
DODGE CITY – You couldn’t blame Great Bend point guard Alex Schremmer for a moment of youthful indiscretion.
Schremmer was tagged for a technical foul after celebrating one of his seven 3-point goals. His message was clear – Dodge City had no chance stopping him.
Schremmer scored a career 30 points to spark the Panthers past Dodge City 83-71 in Friday’s Western Athletic Conference basketball game.
He converted six 3-pointers after halftime on nine attempts, several from well beyond the 3-point stripe at the United Wireless Arena. Schremmer also dished several perfect assists.
The Panthers (4-9, 2-1 WAC) converted 15 of 27 shots from 3-point range with flawless ball movement against Dodge City’s free-wheeling defense. Great Bend attacked Dodge City’s defense from every angle with excellent offensive execution inside and outside.
Payton Duvall scored 15 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Alex Olivas scored 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers. Trent Stueder dominated inside with 11 points.
Panther supersub Nick Wondra delivered his typical spark with eight points, a 3-pointer and several perfect assists.
The Panthers gained the lead with a 13-0 spurt to start the second half. Schremmer hit a pair of treys and Olivas hit a 3-pointer. Schremmer and Bryce Brown drew charging fouls on Red Demon guard Noah Sowers.
Dodge City (6-6, 0-1 WAC) was paced by Noah Sowers with 22 points, John Johnson with 18 points and Adrian Mendoza with 16 points. The Red Demons misfired from 3-point range with 5 of 28 attempts. The Red Demons converted 22 of 40 free throws.
Great Bend sprinted to a 24-19 first-quarter lead behind 9 of 13 shooting. Duvall scored eight points. Schremmer dominated the second half with 20 points.
The Panthers travel to Wamego Tuesday for a non-league basketball game.
