Pratt-The Pratt Greenbacks scored an amazing 48 points in the second quarter enroute to a 70-0 thrashing of the Larned Indians here Friday evening. The start of the game was delayed forty-five minutes by rain and lightning and it might have been better for Larned if it hadn’t started at all.
Five second-quarter turnovers by Larned were almost immediately converted to points in that disastrous second quarter.Three interceptions and two lost fumbles led to Larned trailing at halftime by a 64-0 score. Owen Schmidt, a 5’10” 160lb. Running back and defensive back for the Greenbacks had a once-in-a-lifetime experience as he scored six first-half touchdowns, four of them defensive scores as he intercepted two passes for scores and picked up two Larned fumbles and returned them for scores. He also scored two rushing touchdowns, one of 9 yards and another of 77 yards.
The game started positively for Larned as they took the opening kickoff and, behind the passing of Mason Miller and the running of Jimmy Gardner, moved quickly into Pratt territory. However the drive ended on a fourth down at the Pratt 34-yard line but the Indians had chewed up nearly six minutes on the clock. Pratt went on a methodical drive that ended with a 9-yard touchdown run by Wilson. After holding Larned on downs and forcing a punt, Pratt’s Wilson broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown run and Pratt led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter. Then those second-quarter floodgates opened.
In order, Pratt scored on a “Pick Six” interception by Wilson, a second “Pick Six” by Wilson, a 66-yard touchdown pass to Wilson, a 5-yard touchdown run by Kollyn Strong, a returned fumble run of 33 yards by Schmidt, a 35-yard fumble return by Wilson and a 16-yard touchdown run by Wilson and the scoreboard exhaustively showed Pratt 64, Larned 0 just 23 seconds before halftime.
The second half was played with a running clock and reserves for both teams played most of the rest of the game. The only scoring in the second half came with 1:40 remaining in the game when Pratt’s backup quarterback, Yasir Gonzalez, a sophomore, scampered 8 yards for a touchdown.
Larned had their scoring chances in the first half and, again, in the second half when a receiver broke behind the last pass defender for Pratt and quarterback Mason Miller delivered perfect passes in the hands of the receiver but both were dropped. The Larned running game was stymied most of the night by the aggressive play of the big and talented Pratt defensive line. Jimmy Gardner led the Indian rushing attack with 39 yards. Larned played the game without their usual starting quarterback, Carson Shaver, who is out 4-5 weeks with a broken finger. Mason Miller, making his first start at quarterback, performed well as he completed six passes.
In his post-game comments, Larned coach Brady Keith said, “We’ve just got to get better. That said, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game where there were so many turnovers returned for scores in such a short time. It was a weird night. We have to play with more fire, more intensity. Now, we’ve got to get ready for Russell next week.”
The 70-0 victory by Pratt tied the record for the most lopsided victory in this long-standing rivalry. On September 29, 2000, Pratt defeated Larned 70-0 at Pratt. If Pratt had been successful on the extra-point kick, it would have set a new record.
Pratt, now 3-0, will host Chaparral on Friday while Larned, 1-2 will host the Russell Broncos, also 1-2, for the Indians’ Homecoming events. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
