PRATT -- A 23-13 second quarter run by the Pratt Greenbacks provided the spark for a 68-58 Central Kansas League basketball victory over Larned. Strong inside play by Pratt’s 6-4 Peyton Koehler and 6-3 Karter Hoeme was instrumental.

Pratt’s Hoeme and Koehler each scored 17 points. Guard Matthew Shanline added 12.

Larned converted 20 of 43 shot attempts for 46% and made six of 13 free throws. The Indians (4-5, 0-2 CKL) got a strong performance from 6-2 Layton Crosby with 25 points. Andreus Tucker added 17

“I was really pleased with our effort,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith said. “We caught Pratt on a night that they shot it well (57%) but we never quit battling. We’ve had times when that has happened and we let it affect us, tonight we didn’t. I am pleased with that.”

Larned plays Monday against Central Plains in the St.John Midwinter Classic.                                    …………………………………………………

Pratt held a slim 13-10 lead after the first quarter but went on a hot streak with six straight baskets to extend that lead to 36-23 at halftime. At one time Pratt extended that lead to 19 points in the third quarter but the Indians refused to quit and made several runs of their own, narrowing the gap to ten points but could never get the lead to less than double digits.

The two teams battled evenly throughout the third quarter with Pratt still holding a 50-37 lead entering the final quarter. In the fourth quarter Larned kept the pressure on Pratt with made shots but each time the Greenbacks found an answer, usually coming from Koehler or Hoeme. Larned battled back behind the play of Tucker and Crosby.

Pratt (5-4, 1-2 CKL) made 26 of 46 shots for 57% and converted eight of 16 free throws. Koehler and Hoeme gave Pratt a strong inside game and they led the Greenbacks to an advantage in rebounding and second chance points.
