MARYSVILLE — Russell ended Hoisington’s season with a dominating 17-7 run-rule victory in Friday’s Class AA American Legion State Baseball Tournament. Russell led 9-0 and scored the game’s final eight runs after Hoisington crept within 9-7.
Hoisington (8-5) pushed Russell after scoring seven runs in the third inning. Kaleb Blazek and Hunter Hanzlick started the rally with base hits. Hoisington drew six walks with two hit batters in the inning. Blazek scored on Kyle Lang’s sacrifice fly. Hanzlick scored and Jeremy Breit, Myles Menges, Jerrod Bieberle, and Braxton Donovan scored on wild pitches. Derek Boxberger was forced home on Breit’s second hit-by-pitch.
Hoisington’s Hunter Hanzlick delivered three hits. Kaleb Blazek and Braxton Donovan each had two hits.
Hoisington struggled on the mound against Russell’s pesky hitters. Russell’s Brady Dinkel drove in three runs. Austin Dale and Austin Evans drove in two runs. Tanner Rome and Kyle Farmer deliverd RBI doubles. Brandon Ridgley and Colton Fritschen drove in runs. Hoisington fueled Russell’s offense with walks and errors.
DONOPHAN COUNTY 5, HOISINGTON 0 — State veteran Doniphan County defeated Hoisington 5-0 in Thursday’s American Legion State Baseball Tournament. The Cardinals play Russell at 10 a.m. Friday.
Hoisington’s Alex Schremmer singled for the only base hit against pitcher Zeb Speer. Jerrod Bieberle walked twice and Kade Urban and Myles Menges were hit by pitches. Centerfielder Bieberle turned the best defensive play when he threw out Bryson Kirkland on a fourth-inning double play. Pitcher Kaleb Blazek threw five solid innings.
Wil Smith scored Doniphan County’s first run on a wild pitch. Wil Smith’s triple scored Tyler Franken in the fifth inning. Reid Greaser and Smith drove home runs off Derek Boxberger and Greaser scored on an error.
