As the Western Athletic Conference baseball and softball races heat up, it will tend to bring plenty more fanfare to the City of Great Bend Sports Complex.
The new facility has been a smash hit, receiving rave reviews from fans, coaches and players alike with its plush fields, comfortable covered seating and concessions.
In recent days, bulldozers have been busy flattening ground in preparations for additional parking adjacent to the the four-field venue.
One noticeable omission on the outfield fences thus far is a lack of sign dimensions, showing the measurements down the lines, in the power alleys and in straightaway center.
Yet it in no way does it take away from the progress that has taken place over the last year.
The complex will also be a busy place late this week when Great Bend High School will host three doubleheaders in two days.
GBHS hosts WAC foe Garden City on Thursday, with baseball and softball doubleheaders starting at 4. Just two days ago, GBHS athletic department released a time change for the softball twinbill, which was originally scheduled to start at 3 on Thursday.
The flow of traffic will continue on Friday, when the Panthers baseball team entertains Nickerson in non-conference play, also starting at 4. It will be their second and third doubleheaders at home during a six-day period, a stretch that began Saturday when the Panthers entertained Junction City in non-conference action.
