Macksville 46,
Skyline-Pratt 0

MACKSVILLE — The Macksville High School football team looks to its future in the Eight-Man Division-I playoffs after blanking district foe Skyline on Thursday.
The Mustangs were already into the postseason, but Macksville head coach Jeff Kuckelman said that he wanted his team to use this game to gain momentum.
Macksville’s defense rolled the Thunderbirds’ offense, holding them to 97 yards of total offense — 99 rushing and minus-2 passing. The Mustangs also got an interception and a fumble recovery.
“We played a good second quarter after getting a slow start,” Kuckelman said. “I thought our defense gave us the ball in good field position and then we executed our offense well.”
The Mustangs’ offense was led by quarterback Seth Filbert, who rushed for 135 yards and four touchdowns while completing 4-of-5 passes for 39 yards and one touchdown.
Kuckelman said that he hopes to bring his team’s success in the running game to his Tuesday night playoff game at Hodgeman County, starting at 7.
“We will continue to be balanced between the run and passing game,” Kuckelman said. “Lately our running game has really developed, so we hope to use it to keep the ball away from them.
“There is no substitute for the speed that they have, so the less they have the ball, the less of a chance they have to break one.”
The speed, Kuckelman said, comes from running back Evan Kreger, who rushed for 215 yard on 25 carries and four touchdowns on Thursday against Spearville and tied a national record by scoring 10 touchdowns against Pawnee Heights in Week 1.
“They have a real fast running back and a shifty quarterback,” Kuckelman said of Hodgeman County’s offense. “So they like to run the ball a lot, probably more than any other team we’ve played.
“We are going to have to contain their running back if we are going to win. If he gets outside, it’s over.”

Fowler (7-2)
At Otis-Bison (8-0)

Otis-Bison will be well rested for its Eight-Man Division-I I playoff game on Tuesday night a home against Fowler at 7.
The Cougars were idle on Thursday because their opponent they were slated to face consolidated with another school, freeing up the date. Cougars head coach Travis Starr chose to leave Thursday open instead of scheduling a non-district game.
Fowler will enter the game at 7-2 after a 63-14 win over Bucklin in a non-district game. The Goldbugs held Bucklin’s offense to only 36 rushing yards, but gave up 125 passing yards and one touchdown to Blake Demoret.
“They are a pretty physical group,” Starr said of Fowler. “They have a pretty experienced running back and have three seniors in the backfield. But I’d like to think we are a pretty physical group too.”
Cosme Estrada led Fowler with 190 rushing yards and five touchdowns on nine carries. Goldbugs quarterback Jeremy Milford threw for 111 yards and one touchdown in Fowlers’ win Thursday.
“They have some good looking athletes on their line, but they are young,” Starr said. “We have more experience on our offensive and defensive lines so I think we have an advantage at the line.”
