Great Bend High School captured second place in both boys and girls divisions on Tuesday during the GBHS Invitational track and field meet at Memorial Stadium.
Matt Moyd won the 110-meter hurdles (15.03 seconds), Chris Burley won the pole vault (12 feet, six inches) and David Simmons won the shot put (51-1) for the Panthers. Simon Sullivan won the javelin (156-4) and placed second in the pole vault, and Sheldon LeShore finished second in both the 100 and 200 dashes.
“Matt won the 110 hurdles in convincing fashion,” Great Bend head coach Bo Black said. “Sheldon LeShore had a good day in the sprints.
“Simon had a good day in the javelin and Chris (Burley) is just a kid that gets things done. ... whatever he can do to help the team. He obviously has a bright future.”
Leading the way for the Lady Panthers was Hannah Wondra winning the 400 dash (one minute, 3.82 seconds) and Olivia Basye winning the 800 (2:40.28).
Maggie Loera captured first place in the 300 hurdles (51.31) for Great Bend.
“We just lack so much depth,” Black said of missing two of their track athletes, who were playing soccer. “We’re spread very thin on the girls side. To get second place in our meet at home was pretty good.”
A botched exchange prevented the Panthers from winning the 4x400-meter relay. Alex Reed, who ran the anchor for Great Bend in the 4x400 relay, couldn’t quite make up lost ground as the Panthers finished second in a time of 3:36.55. First-place Liberal clocked 3:33.62.
“I think for the first legitimate track meet, back from the knee surgery, it was just really a chance for Alex to get on the track for the first time this year and I thought he did a good job,” Black said of Reed, the two-time defending state champion in the 400 dash, who is coming off major surgery from a knee injury sustained during football season.

“I think he’s real close to being ready to go full-speed.”
The Panthers’ 4x400 relay on Tuesday consisted of Chris Burley, Mauricio Uribe, Raydell Jones and Reed.
“Sheldon LeShore is probably going to be our first leg on that,” Black said. “He hurt his hip in the 200.
“It’s just a timing thing. We hadn’t worked on that exchange (between Burley and Uribe) all week between the two, and it’s just midseason track. You saw it all over the track today. Nobody’s handoffs were perfect.”
