PRATT — Hoisington High’s Christopher Ball, a two-time state champion, won three matches to capture the 152-pound division at the Pratt Wrestling Tournament. Ball pinned two foes and beat Pratt’s Kadence Riner 4-0 in the championship match.
Cardinals Tanner Cassity (138) and Sean Urban (170) and Wyatt Pedigo (182) all placed second. Joshua Ball (160) finished third. Augusta’s Avin George defeated Cassity 9-7 for first place. Scott City’s Wyatt Hayes downed Urban 5-0 in the finals. Holcomb’s Chance Rodriguez defeated Pedigo 12-0 for first place.
The Cardinals earned valuable points from Cole Steinert (120), Dayne Yott (145) and Riley Philbern (285). All three qualifeid for the consolation semifinals before losing.
“Our coaching staff was very pleased with our performance,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. “We saw many bright spots to be encouraged about for down the road. All of our kids wrestled with grit and determination. We’re completely retooled from the team we had last year at the end of the season as only four of the wrestlers who participated on our team were here last year. Those four all made it to the finals. In time, this team is going to make a strong impact at the state tournament.”
The Cardinals scored 137.5 to finish fourth behind Scott City (151.5), Augusta (147) and Pratt (137.5). The Cardinals finished ahead of 6A Wichita Northwest, 5A Goodard Eisenhower, 5A Liberal.
