ELLIS — Seven Hoisington High wrestlers captured first place in the Ellis Railer Round-Robin Wrestling Tournament. The Cardinals scored 252 points and WaKeeney-Trego placed second (160).
Dylan Carrier (120), Tanner Cassity (132), Dustin Edmondson (138), Dante Urban (152), Wyatt Pedigo (170), Sean Urban (182) and Landen Urban (285) placed first for No. 2 ranked Class 3A Hoisington.
Brinttain Noah (160), Benjamin Schneider (195) and Cade Boxberger (220) each placed runner-up.
The tournament allowed for teams to bring all of their participants in wrestling to compete in a round robin setup. Teams designated who their scoring wrestler would be at each weight. Extra team’s members at a weight class competed with other team members for the varsity medal, but could not score team points. Non-scoring wrestlers who placed third were Nicholas Long (152), Jake Curtis (170), Jared Curtis (182).
Hoisington competed without Dayne Yott, Justin Bradley, Jonathan Ball and Christopher Ball, who were unable to compete.
“I was very pleased with how our team has been able to perform,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. “This is a very strong team that has very high expectations. We are gifted with some outstanding kids at the varsity and JV level.”
Hoisington will be the site of the Cardinal Corner Classic starting at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hoisington Activity Center.
“We will try to get our full team on the mat Friday,” Schmidt said. “We will make major moves to our lineup for that tournament. But I do not expect our lineup to be in place until mid-January. We are battling some injuries. Our late start with athletes having traveled deep into the football playoffs will cause our lineup to fluctuate.”
