GARDEN PLAIN — Hoisington High School’s wrestling team claimed five individual Class 3-1A regional championships on Saturday — the highest number of regional titles in Cardinals history.
On top of that, Hoisington, which is ranked No. 2 in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, blew out the competition for a regional crown as a team. It scored 169.5 points, beating second-place Lyons, which finished with 111.5.
“We had some kids wrestle unbelievably,” Cardinals head coach Dan Schmidt said. “Then we had kids fall short of our expectations for one reason or another. Overall, I thought we did very well.”
Cayton Janousek in the 220-pound weight class, Avery Urban (195), Hagen Hanzlick (182), Chance Demel (145) and Brandon Ball (126) captured first place in their respective classes.
Darwin Brickley (285) seized second, and Landon Harmon (113) finished fourth to round out the seven state qualifiers for Hoisington.
Last year, the Cardinals qualified nine wrestlers, finishing second overall behind Scott City at the state tournament.
“We were so close on three others who lost in the consolation semis,” Schmidt said. “But we have a good group going to state. We have a lot of experience, and a lot of quality in this group.”
Of the seven qualifiers, four have been to the state tournament before, including Demel, who has qualified in all four seasons of his high school career, and Ball, who won a state title last year in the 120 weight class.
The 3-1A state tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the Fort Hays State University campus.
