Cardinals lose baseball doubleheader

HALSTEAD — Hoisington’s baseball team staged a seventh-inning rally for a 5-5 tie, only to see Halstead score the game-winning run for a 6-5 and 7-4 baseball sweep Thursday. The hard-luck Cardinals (6-8) have lost six consecutive games after a hot start.
DRAGONS 7, CARDINALS 4 — The Cardinals’ lack of defense contributed to five unearned runs off losing pitcher Alex Schremmer. 
Jeremy Breit’s bases-loaded double scored Ethan Hubbard, Jerred Bieberle and Hunter Hanzlick for the Cardinals’ third-inning highlight. Myles Menges forced home Collin Schlochtermeier on a bases-loaded seventh-inning walk for the Cardinals’ final run.
The Cardinals missed a scoring opportunity after Menges’ leadoff triple in the sixth inning. Lakye Heimerman retired the next three batters. 
Tony Morris doubled and scored a first inning-run. Heimerman’s RBI single was followed by sacrifice flies by Dalton Kraus and Brian Casey in a three-run third inning for a 4-3 lead. 
Jon Fulghum’s RBI single drove home Dalton Kraus in the fifth inning. The Cardinals gift wrapped two insurance runs on three sixth-inning errors. 
DRAGONS 6, CARDINALS 5 — Schlochtermeier’s two-run single scored Trey Byers and Jerred Bieberle with the game-tying runs to spark a four-run seventh-inning rally. Bieberle was hit by a pitch to force home Kyle Lang for the Cardinals’ first run. Alex Schremmer’s two-out single scored Menges and Schlochtermeier’s hit tied the score. Kaden Kraus retired Hanzlick to preserve the tie. 
Dalton Kraus delivered the game-winning single off losing pitcher Breit to score David Schulte, who had reached on an infield error. 
The Dragons led 1-0 when Dalton Kraus’ single drove home Chase VanSteenburg. Kaden Kraus’ two-run single scored Fulghum and Morris for a 3-0 lead after three innings. 
Hoisington’s Byers’ singled to drove home Lang in the fourth inning for a 3-1 score. Halstead’s Lane Boswell and Fulghum delivered RBI singles for a 5-1 lead after six innings.
