HOISINGTON — Returning state runner-up Christopher Ball (33-0, 152) headlines Hoisington’s wrestling regional qualifiers at Beloit that features sixth-place finisher Tanner Cassity (26-10, 126), Sean Urban (27-12, 160), two-time qualifier Austin McHenry (31-7, 220) and fifth-place finisher Landen Urban (35-1, 285).
Landen Urban, Sean Urban and Austin McHenry captured first place in the Central Kansas League wrestling tournament and Cassity placed third. State runner-up Jonathan Ball and No. 2 state-ranked Justin Bradley are sidelined with injuries.
“The team is led by state runner-up Christopher Ball at 152, and the Cardinals feature some outstanding wrestlers,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. “Sean Urban and Tanner Cassity look to be sixth seeds at regionals. Jeremy Breit has had an outstanding season, but is probably a sixth-seed at regionals. I like our chance at the state tournament to bring home medals if we can get our kids through regionals.”
The top four finishers in each weight class qualify for the Class 3A state meet Feb. 26-27 at Hays.
No. 4 ranked Marysville joins No. 8 ranked Hoisington. Schmidt said Smith Center, Russell, Bennington, Phillipsburg, Beloit and Lyons feature qualify wrestlers.
“We’ve been blessed in the past, but this regional is a real challenge,” said Schmidt. “The regional is loaded with quality wrestlers and the teams will knock each other off. Beloit will be the toughest regional in Class 3-1A as many of the wrestlers at the regional are outstanding.”
