BELOIT — The West had no answer for the Will Bruna show in the East’s 28-20 victory in the Eight-Man Division 2 All-Star Football Game. The East leads the all-time series 11-6.
Bruna scored four touchdowns and accounted for all 28 points and ran or passed on 55 of the 70 East plays. Bruna scored the tying touchdown against a soft West defense and added the game-winning TD and 2-point conversion to Caldwell’s Dilyn Volavka in overtime. Linn’s Kalen Richardson recovered the game-ending fumble by the West.
Otis-Bison’s Brad Lightfoot and Kade Urban played for the West team. The game featured 11 turnovers as the defenses dominated with big plays.
“Our defense played great. You can’t ask for a whole lot more out of your defense,” said Otis-Bison coach Travis Starr. “They had their backs up against the wall a lot. It’s an awesome experience.”
Dighton’s Dylan Foos picked off a Will Bruna pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. Wallace County’s Levi Johnson added a 2-point run to give the West an 8-0 lead.
Hanover’s Bruna converted a 3-yard TD to cap a 64-yard East scoring drive. Davis Dubbert from St. John’s/Tipton caught the 2-point pass from Bruna.
The West scored after Pretty Prairie’s Denton Webster intercepted a pass. Foos caught a 23-yard TD pass from Colton Schmidt of Ingalls for a 14-8 lead.
The West committed four second-half turnovers. Dubbert recovered a fumble at the West 15-yard line. Bruna scored a 3-yard TD for a 14-14 tie.
The West snapped the tie when Dighton’s Tyler Lingg connected with his high school teamate Foos on an 8-yard TD for a 20-14 lead with 1:29 to play in regulation.
Bruna converted a fourth-down pass to Dubbert and the East raced 58 yards for the tying touchdown on Bruna’s 4-yard run with 22 seconds left. The conversion pass was intercepted by Pretty Prairie’s Denton Webster to force overtime.
