HAYS— Shawnee Heights’ Tony Barksdale made a pair of trips to the endzone Saturday to help lead the East All Stars over the West in a 21-0 shutout at this year’s Kansas Shrine Bowl.

Barksdale, the East MVP, polled 19 carries and netted 59 yards on the ground including a ten yard scoring run following a nine-play 38-yard drive with 6:14 remaining in the opening period. Quarterback Alec Beatty (Topeka HS) then connected with Barksdale on a 53-yard touchdown pass off a four-play, 70-yard march. The East capped the shutout in the third period as Troy’s Tristan Speer found Dalton Schoen (Blue Valley West) on an 84-yard strike after two plays and 82 yards. Lyondon’s Dawson Swinehart was perfect on extra point attempts at 3-3.

The West had their chances with two trips into the red zone. The first resulted in a fumble late in the opening half.

As a team, the East finished with 336 yards of total offense while holding the West to just 136.

The West’s Layne Bieberle of Central Plains posted a reception for 28 yards in Saturday’s All Star game while Sheldon Schmidt (LaCrosse) totaled five tackles for the West defense.

Barksdale finished the night with 180 yards of total offense while Holcomb’s Blake Richmeier was tabbed the West MVP following a team best seven tackles.

Next year’s Shrine Bowl will be held at Emporia State.
