Memorial Day weekend is Great Bend High School senior thrower Jacy Quade’s final Class 6-1A state track and field championships at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
Translation? It’s her final opportunity to capture a 5A state crown in the discus.
A two-time Western Athletic Conference champion in both the shot and the discus, Quade enters the Friday-Saturday meet coming off a pair of state-qualifying performances at the regional meet last Friday at Salina District Stadium.
Quade was a second-place finisher in the discus (123 feet, four inches) and placed third in the shot put (35-1¾) to qualify for the state extravaganza for the third straight season.
A senior, Quade established personal bests of the 130-3 in the discus and 38-10 in the shot during a season-opening meet at the Junction City Invitational on March 30.
Though she hasn’t eclipsed the aforementioned distances, Quade was still able to repeat as WAC champion in both events two weeks ago, along with qualifying at the regional meet.
“I was happy with the way I threw,” said Quade of the regional meet. “I have been struggling for the past couple weeks and so I’m just building back up for the state meet.”
In the discus, Quade is still looking for a herculean throw, an eye-popping heave throwers only dream about.
Her last chance comes this weekend.
“Focus and confidence, in general,” Quade said of her mind-set. “It’s about staying calm and making sure that you get all of the pieces put together into that one good throw that will win the meet.”
At the 2011 state meet, Quade placed fourth in the discus (123-1) and fifth in the shot (36-6¼). As a sophomore, Quade finished eighth in the discus.
