Today at 3, 10 high school wrestling teams will converge on the Hoisington Activity Center for the Cardinal Corner Classic.
The tournament, hosted by the Cardinals, will include Great Bend, Larned, Concordia, Cimarron, Thomas More Prep Marian, Holcomb, Lakin, Garden Plain and Oakley.
Great Bend is ranked No. 10 in Class 5A in the latest Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll, and boasts three individuals ranked in their weight classes — No. 1-ranked Chris Burley (126), No. 2 Kade Sanders (138) and No. 3 Greg Burley (145).
The Panthers won last year’s classic, finishing 16 points ahead of second-place Concordia. Hoisington finished in third place.
Chris Burley and Ryan DesLauriers captured first-place finishes at the classic last season, and both are back this year.
Chris Burley, who was a 5A state champion two years ago in the 112-pound weight class, will have the chance to wrestle Brandon Ball, who is ranked No. 1 in 3-1A in 126.
Ball won a state title in the 120 weight class last season.
The Cardinals are ranked No. 3, and have four wrestlers ranked — Ball, No. 2 Chance Demel (145), No. 5 Cayton Janousek (220) and No. 6 Hagen Hanzlick (182).
Concordia is ranked No. 7 in 4A.
