The Great Bend High School boys’ bowling team swept Garden City on Thursday afternoon at Walnut Bowl, winning all seven points available in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Lady Panthers beat Garden City 4-3.
The Panthers are now 25-10 and in first place in the WAC standings, putting them six points ahead of second-place Dodge City (19-16).
Liberal (16-19) is in third place in the standings and Garden City (10-25) is in fourth.
Dakota Conaway led the boys team with a top series of 659. His top game was 225.
“We weren’t really on fire, but we came out and took care of business,” GBHS head coach Mike Perry said of the boys. “Dakota and Eric (Ruiz) were really solid all day. So was Danny Herrman. It seemed like a lot of experience paid off today. We had a lot of juniors bowling and Garden had a lot of sophomores, younger kids who haven’t bowled at the varsity level.
“We just kind of got on top and stayed hot. Then that really carried over to the Bakers.”
Eric Ruiz finished as the Panthers No. 2 bowler, rolling a 620 series.
The Lady Panthers are also 25-10 in the WAC, putting them in first place in the standings. Garden City is in second at 20-15.
Dodge City (17-18) is in third, and Liberal (8-27) is in fourth.
The girls team was led by Miranda Hejny, who finished with a 603 series, and a high game of 207.
“It’s kind of like ‘A Tale of Two Cities,’ ‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,’” Perry said of the girls. “We won the matches and really turned it on in the third match. We set ourselves up for a sweep, too. Then we come back out in the Bakers matches and we go 0-3. None of our games we shot were really that bad. We just missed marks we should’ve had. Seemed like everytime Garden City needed to get a double or a turkey, they did, and they snuck with three wins.”
Quade finished with a series of 527.
Dodge City’s boys beat Liberal’s boys 5-2, while the Lady Demons swept the Lady Redskins 7-0.
GBHS hosts Liberal on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
