Great Bend High School’s girls’ golf team competed at the Hutchinson Invitational on Thursday.
Team results were unavailable at presstime.
McKenna Mauler carded the top score for GBHS, shooting 96. She was followed by Maddie Werth (99), Hannah Mauler (108), Taylor Mohr (112), Michaela Cape (113) and Rachel Gros (115).
The top four scores were kept for the Lady Panthers’ team score, which tallied to 415.
“They were playing pretty well,” said GBHS head coach Troy Stein     of his top two placers, “and then it started pouring rain and the scores got a little ugly after that. I think they would have played better if it had not rained.
“Hannah Mauler actually shot a 47 on the first nine holes she played, the back nine, and had never played in those conditions before.”
Great Bend has its lone home meet of the season on Tuesday, when it stages a Western Athletic Conference meet at StoneRidge, starting at 3 p.m., with Garden City, Hays, Liberal and Dodge City as the competition.
“We’re excited to be playing on our home course and we hope that it will be an advantage for us,” Stein said. “The varsity is going to play and the junior varsity will get to play also, so everybody gets a chance to play the home course and have their friends and family come out to watch.”
Before Thursday’s night’s rain-filled invite, the Lady Panthers were coming off a solid third-place finish the week before at a meet in Liberal, where McKenna Mauler, a junior, fired a 42 to finish second on the leaderboard in the nine-hole event.
Werth, a two-time state qualifier and a senior, finished in a tie for 10th place, shooting a 48.
“They’ve been shooting in the mid-40s for nine holes and around 95 to 100 for the 18 holes for most of the season,” Stein said.
Cape shot a 53, Gros and Hannah Mauler shot 55s and Mohr shot a 61.
Their team score was 198.
In an earlier tourney, Werth shot a 41-44—85 for 10th place, and McKenna Mauler finished 30th with a 43-52—95 at the Salina South Invitational on Sept. 18.
