HAYS — The Great Bend High School girls soccer team gave up a late goal to Hays to lose on Monday, 2-1.
The Lady Panthers fall to 4-4-1, including 2-3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Hays struck first with a first-half goal and held a 1-0 lead going into halftime, but Great Bend stepped up its game in the second half.
“We played a lot better in the second half,” GBHS head coach Gus Prieto said. “We controlled the ball much better in the second half. We probably controlled it for about 30 minutes. We just had a mistake on defense, and they scored.”
Fighting the weather and poor field conditions, Great Bend tied the game at one with a goal from Christina Hernandez, who scored on a free kick.
“It was really windy and really muddy,” Prieto said. “You can’t play soccer in those conditions. It messes with the ball.
“Christina scored on a free kick from about 30 yards out. She tried to chip the ball into the box. It was a very good shot.”
However, the Lady Indians put in the go-ahead goal with less than five minutes remaining get the win.
The junior varisty team won its game with Hays, 2-0.
GBHS is back in action on Thursday at home against Dodge City.
