HAYS — As the high school basketball season progresses, it’s still back to the drawing board for the Great Bend Lady Panthers.
The winless streak reached eight games for Great Bend on Tuesday night, a byproduct of a 33-16 road shellacking at the hands of Western Athletic Conference foe Hays.
“We had some girls that acted like they had never played basketball before,” Great Bend head coach Jason Tatkenhorst said. “We were trying to catch the ball with one hand and we were trying to rebound with one hand.
“That tells the coach that no one wants to play basketball.”
Great Bend sputtered offensively again throughout, scoring only eight points in each half as it was no contest for the Lady Indians.
Even when the Lady Panthers found the game getting away from them, they continued to work the ball around the perimeter without showing a measure of desperation in getting off a shot.
“We had some people that acted like they had never practiced before,” Tatkenhorst said.
This longtime rivalry, which has had a propensity in the past for tight games, seemed to be over after third quarters. The Tribe outscored Great Bend 8-2 in the period to go up 23-10.
Hays, which improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in WAC, was led by Paige Lunsford, who equaled Great Bend’s point total with 16 points.
Great Bend trailed only 7-5 after Kelsey Crosby nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing as the first-quarter buzzer sounded.
But the Lady Panthers managed only 11 points the remainder of the game.
“It’s the pride factor,” Tatkenhorst said of his team’s struggles. “How much pride do you have? We’ll find out Friday night.”
