LAWRENCE — The Great Bend High School girls’ cross country team finished in sixth place at the Rim Rock Farm High School Cross Country Classic Saturday in Lawrence.
The boys’ team finished in 31st.
Leading the Lady Panthers was Rubi Torres, who finished in 15th place with a time of 16 minutes, 28 seconds. Hannah Wondra crossed the finish line at 17:13, which put her in 48th place.
“There were a lot of good teams,” Great Bend’s cross country coach Todd Kaiser said. “The girls who ran this course last year all improved their times this year so I’m pleased with that.
“Last season the girls finished in seventh. This year they moved up a spot so it is good to see their improvement.”
Kaitlynn Tuey finished in 52nd, Morgan Harwood finished in 72nd and Ali Heilman finished in 78th to count as scoring runners for the girls’ team.
The Lady Panthers finished with 261 points, putting them behind Bishop Carrol (84), Fort Zumwalt West (133), Kearney (136), Stilwell Blue Valley (237) and Junction City (256).
“I’m pretty please with how the girls did overall,” Kaiser said. “(Bishop) Carrol was the only 5A team that beat us and we figured that they would be the team to beat.”
The boys’ team was led by Chon Chavez, who took 33rd place with a time of 17:25. Chavez was the only Panther to finish inside the top 100.
“The boys finished in 31st which, I know doesn’t sound too impressive, but they are running better as a team,” Kaiser said. “A lot of the boys who ran this course last year improved on the course time.
“Kole (Stiner) even ran a season’s best for him, about five seconds faster than he ran at Hays.”
Cristian Garcia (119), Kole Stiner (123), Ky Heeke (211) and Michael Sullivan (216) were the other four scoring runners for the Great Bend boys.
