GBHS places sixth at Hays

HAYS — In a season-opening high school tournament on Monday at Smoky Hill Golf Course, Great Bend finished sixth out of nine teams.
Garden City had a combined score of 188 to win the Hays High Invitational, with the host Indians placing a distant second at 207. Salina Central (213) placed third, Salina South (219) was fourth and Dodge City (230) finished fifth.
Abbi Shaddix of Garden City fired a 39 to beat teammate Abbey Campbell (40) by one stroke.
Great Bend, led by junior McKenna Mauler and senior Maddie Werth, finished at 240. Mauler finished at 55 and Werth shot 57.
GBHS travels to Salina Central for a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
