Great Bend baseball sweeps Liberal

Great Bend High School Panther baseball team player Jaxx Hillman scores GBHSs first run against the Liberal High Redskins Tuesday afternoon at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

Great Bend’s pitchers earned big outs to earn a hard-fought Western Athletic Conference baseball sweep 2-1 and 6-3 over Liberal Tuesday.

GAME 1
GREAT BEND 2, LIBERAL 1

Great Bend pitcher Brett Basye worked out of trouble in a brilliant seven-inning performance. Basye stranded six baserunners in scoring position. He retired Slyman Pando and Kaiden Long in the seventh inning to end the game after Liberal’s Jared Hasik and Cole Evans singled.
Panther shortstop Bryce Lytle made the other decisive play by starting a double play to second baseman Jaxx Hillman on a sixth-inning groundball by Alex Castillo with the bases loaded.
Great Bend scored both runs without a run batted in. Jaxx Hillman doubled and scored on a first-inning throwing error to home. Brayden Smith tripled and scored on a second-inning wild pitch.
Liberal’s Sylman Pando doubled home Cole Evans when centerfielder Brady Michel barely missed a diving catch. Panthers Michel and left fielder Jacob Murray made catches on long fly balls launched by Tim Fitzgerald.

Reliever Anson Hall and starter Bryce Lytle stranded 10 baserunners in the nightcap. Hall retired Angel Archuleta and Stevie Lira with the bases loaded in the seventh inning.
The Panthers (3-1, 2-0 WAC) delivered six runs on three hits. Maneth drilled a bases-loaded triple for a 4-1 lead. The Redskins (4-2, 0-2 WAC) gift-wrapped the five-run inning with three errors.
After Jacob Murray, Hall and Brady Michel loaded the bases without a hit, Jared Maneth’s triple made it 4-1. Brayden Smith reached on an infield single sandwiched around Konnor Ireland and Payton Mauler reaching base on errors to make it 6-1.
Jaxx Hillman singled to start the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Michel. Liberal tied it 1-1 when Tim Fitzgerald scored on a third-inning groundball by Sylman Pando.
The Redskins’ Long hit a two-run single that scored Fitzgerald and Jared Irsik in the fifth inning after two singles and an error for a 6-3 score.
