You knew it was going to be a great day when substitute bowler Dalton Dicks posted Great Bend’s highest score of the day.
Great Bend’s bowlers nearly earned a sweep over Liberal High School with a 10-1 boys victory and an 11-0 sweep by the Panther girls. An appreciative crowd roared its support with well-orchestrated cheers.
“It was a great atmosphere,” said Great Bend coach Mike Perry. “It was great to see so many people supporting Panther bowling.”
Dicks subbed for Panther teammate Cameron Keener at the last minute, and he took advantage with a team high 657 series (191-228-238). Last year’s Western Athletic Conference Bowler of the Year Jordan Black placed third at 643 (202-206-235). Great Bend swept three games, 790-730; 856-738; 889-828 at Walnut Bowl.
The Panthers missed a sweep when Liberal’s sweetest player Duncan Hinz (645) capped four consecutive strikes in the second Baker game for a 223-202 win. The Panthers sliced a 30-pin lead to 10 pins when the Redskins closed with four strikes. Black and teammate A.J. Roberts each threw four strikes in the Baker format. The Panthers recorded six consecutive strikes in the first Baker game when Black missed one pin with his second shot in the 10th frame.
Dicks said he likes how Walnut Bowl treats its lanes with a drier surface. He has more adjustments when lanes apply more oil.
“I’m really pleased. It was a really good day,” Dicks said. “I’m a pretty good home bowler. There’s nothing like a home advantage. I was a pleasantly surprised by how well I played.”
Panther veteran Jordan Vsetecka posted the high score in the girls division with a 585 series (190-223-172), which exceeded her score last week. Vsetecka rolled a pair of 600-plus series last season for the 5A state champions. She posted a strike or spare in her Baker frames. Lexi Fox sparked a 199 Baker game with two strikes.
The Great Bend girls rolled to easy wins, 680-603; 670-529 and 598-546. The final Baker game went down to the last shot after Vsetecka earned a game-clinching strike after Fox’s spare kept the Panthers ahead. Liberal’s final bowler Lacey Killingsworth had a chance for a Baker tie, but she missed her spare in the 10th frame.
“I knew it was close, but I didn’t pay attention to how close it was,” Vsetecka said. “I was rolled my normal shot. It was a great day today. Our team bowled a lot better than last week. Our young girls are going to keep improving. They are gaining experience.”
