Great Bend boys lose; St. John, Larned win games

KAPAUN MT. CARMEL 67, GREAT BEND 61
EL DORADO — Brock Monty scored 22 points as Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel held off pesky Great Bend 67-61 Thursday in the El Dorado Bluestem Classic. The Crusaders (6-4) answered every Panther offensive challenge.
Great Bend’s Jason Crosby scored 24 points and converted four free throws to draw the Panthers within 65-59. Brayden Smith scored a career high 12 points and Jacob Murray added 10 points.
The Panthers (3-7) play Wichita Collegiate at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The Crusaders led 26-17 when Crosby finished off 13 consecutive points to get the Panthers within 29-28. Crosby converted a pair of 3-pointers and added seven free throws in the run. Jacob Murray’s 3-pointer tied the score at 31, but the Crusaders scored the final five points for a 36-31 halftime lead.
Monty scored nine third-quarter points for a 55-46 lead, fueled by a 13-2 run.
Both teams shot 50 percent the first half. The Panthers made 18 of 41 field goals and 16 of 21 free throws.

ST. JOHN — Cole Kinnamon and Jorge Calleros each scored 18 points and defending champion St. John roared past Nickerson 65-47 Thursday in the Mid-Winter Classic.
The Tigers led 61-30 after three periods. Cody Casey led Nickerson (4-7) with 20 points.

ST. JOHN — Tanner Galliart scored 18 points to lead Larned past Macksville in the Mid-Winter Classic Thursday. Jordan Zimmerman (11) and Trevor Meyer (10 also scored in double figures. The Indians play St. John In Friday’s semifinals. Larned led 31-20 at halftime.
Diego Delgadillo led Macksville with 15 points and Jacob Rein added 13 points. Macksville made 9 of 30 shots from 3-point range.

OTIS-BISON GIRLS 61, ELLINWOOD 50
HOISINGTON — Otis-Bison raced past the Ellinwood girls 61-50 in Thursday’s consolation game in the Hoisington Winter Jam.
Taylor Regan led the Cougars with 25 points, 16 in the second half. Haley Vondracek scored 13 points and Caitlyn Schilowsky added 10 points and two 3-pointers.
Ellinwood’s Brittney Beck scored 22 points with four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles and Maddie Hayes added eight points.
The Cougars led 12-0 in the first quarter and scored the first six points of the second period got an 18-6 lead. The Cougars stretched their lead to 39-26 in the third period. The Cougars led 31-22 at halftime and 45-32 after three quarters.
Otis-Bison (4-7) will play for fifth place at 11:30 a.m. Ellinwood (1-10) plays at 11:30 a.m. for seventh place Saturday.

HOISINGTON — Joe Dortland scored 11 points to spark Victoria past Otis-Bison 42-34 in a consolation game Friday at the Hoisington Winter Jam. The Knights will play in the fifth-place game at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
Hayden Maier led the Cougars with 11 points and freshman Maitland Wiltse added 10 points. The Cougars (6-5) play at 1:15 p.m. Saturday for seventh place Saturday.
