SALINA — Both the Great Bend High School girls’ and boys’ track and field teams finished fifth at the Salina Central Invitational on Friday evening.
The Panthers finished with 48 points, and the Lady Panthers recorded 40.5.
“I thought we did OK,” GBHS head coach Bo Black said. “This was one of our best meets that we’ve been to this year by straight speed. There was a lot of good competition there, and our kids worked real hard.”
Great Bend’s pole vaulters continued to be consistent, with Chris Burley taking first place (14 feet, six inches) in the boys’ competition and Hannah Middleton (10-0) winning the girls’ competition.
“Hannah’s reached 10-5 before, but she’s been right there are 10 feet all season,” Black said. “We’ve been kind of waiting for her to get over 10 feet. It was a really good day for her.
“It gets to be kind of a long day for Chris. He has to wait around a long while before he gets to jump. Everybody’s out before he gets in there at 13 feet.”
Great Bend had four second-place finishes — Jayce Brack in the shot put (51-9), Nick Warren in the discus (154-6), Darion Yager in the 300-meter hurdles (43.47 seconds) and Shelby Tracy in the long jump (15-5 3/4).
Great Bend travels to Dodge City on Thursday for the Western Athletic Conference meet, starting at 4 p.m.
