WICHITA — At the end of the two-day Shocker Pre State Challenge 2013, Great Bend High School head track and field coach Bo Black said he was just happy to have another meet under his team’s belt.
“I thought out kids competed hard, and had some good finishes,” Black said. “I thought it was a good meet for us, but then again, it’s just nice to get to have another meet.”
The challenge, which started Thursday and ended on Friday, was held at Cessna Stadium, the venue for the Class 6-1A Track and Field State Championship.
“This gives them a chance to see the stadium before the state meet,” Black said. “Most of the older kids that we brought had already been there before, but it’s still nice to see it, especially for the younger kids. It’s run similar to the state meet.
“Hopefully the kids we brought will be back there in a month and a half.”
The challenge is split into three separate competitions — Class 6-4A, 3-1A and Elite.
Elite competitors are chosen based on their entry time, distance or height. For some events, the top eight are taken. For other events, there are more athletes chosen based on how many heats the event has.
Great Bend’s three pole vaulters at the event all qualified for the elite competition.
Selam Ball captured second place (9-6 1/4), and Hannah Middleton finished in third (9-0 1/4).
Chris Burley finished second (14-0) behind Bishop Carroll’s Nick Meyer (16-0).
“Selam got second and Middleton got third,” Black said. “They both did well, but I think they were a little disappointed with their height.
“It was actually Chris’ first meet this year, and he’s already reaching 14 feet. That’s a great sign for him. Second is good. That Bishop Carroll kid is legit.”
Chon Chavez was the only other individual from Great Bend to compete in the elite class. He finished fifth in the 1,600-meter run (4:41.06).
Great Bend hosts an invitational on Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. It was originally scheduled to be a junior varsity meet, but due to inclement weather, Great Bend’s varsity invite on April 9 was postponed to the same day.
Each team is allowed five entries in each event except relays, where teams can have two entries, and field events, where there are unlimited entries.
The javelin event starts at 2:30 p.m., followed by the rest of the field events at 3:30. Track events are slated to start at 4:30.
“We’ll probably be having our JV and some of the younger kids from our varsity competing,” Black said. “There are some of the younger kids who haven’t had a meet yet this year, so we want to get them out there to compete.”

Sophie Hayes finished third in the elite class’ 300 hurdles to lead Ellinwood at the Shockers Pre State Challenge 2013.
The junior turned in a time of 47.98 in the 300 hurdles, and captured fourth place in the 100 hurdles (15.56).
“It was a good meet,” Ellinwood head coach Lyles Lashley said. “The girls’ side had a great meet. The relays ran well, and Sophie did great in the hurdles.”
Junior distance runner Pedro Montoya turned in a time of 9:32.73 in the 3,200 run for fourth place in the elite competition.
“He beat his own school record by 11 seconds,” Lashley said of Montoya. “I think he has the fastest time in 2A by about 45 seconds so far this season.”
Kyle Oglesbee captured a sixth-place finish in the elite 800 run (1:59.44), and Chelsea Day finished ninth in the elite 100 dash (13.28).
Ellinwood travels to St. John for the Keith Blide Invitational on Friday. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
