Great Bend girls track team takes first; Reed wins 400

BUHLER — The Great Bend High School girls’ track and field team took first place with 133.5 points on Thursday at the Buhler Invitational.
The Lady Panthers finished 18.5 points ahead of second-place Goddard.
“Overall I think the meet went real well,” GBHS head coach Bo Black said. “The girls competed real well on Thursday. It was one of the bigger meets we’ve been to this year and to win, we were very pleased.
“The boys competed well, too.”
Alex Reed’s return headlined the boys division for Great Bend, which took third place, scoring 82 points. The defending Class 5A state champion the past two years in the 400-meter dash, Reed won that event at Buhler in a time of 50.88 seconds, beating Hays’ Ebu Camera (51.36).
Reed also competed in the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.
“This was his first full meet coming back,” Black said. “He competed a couple of relays as well as the 400 dash. I thought he did very good for his first time back.
“He still has a ways to go before he is back. We wanted him competing by April 21 and we’ve done that. I think it’s just a matter of him trusting that he can run at full speed again.”
The Lady Panthers were led by Rubi Torres, who finished in first place in the 1,600 run with a time of 5:35.51. Torres also took second place in the 800, crossing the finish line at 2:29.31.
“She also competed in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays,” Black said of Torres. “All of our distance runners did well on Thursday. Kaitlyn Tuey had some good finishes as well, but the girls track team is really led by Rubi.”
Tuey took second in the 3,200 (12:28.73) and fourth in the 1,600 (5:49.17).
Jacy Quade continues to dominate the field events for the Lady Panthers, taking first place in the shot put and the discus.
“She is a young lady who continues to get better every day out there,” Black said of Quade. “She leads our field events, but we got some good points from our pole vaults and triple jumps.”
In the shot put, Quade reached a distance of 38 feet, 1 1/2 inches and she threw the discus a distance of 126-3.
Great Bend competes again on Friday in Hutchinson, one of only two meets before the Western Athletic Conference meet in Dodge City.
“We strive really hard to peak at the right time, which is at the conference meet,” Black said. “I think we made great strides towards doing that on Thursday in Buhler.”
