LYONS — The high school girls’ tennis season kicked off on Thursday as Great Bend sent its junior varsity squad to compete at a Lyons quadrangular.
The high school season allows a varsity team to compete in only eight meets, and the Lady Panthers had nine scheduled, which Great Bend veteran head coach Shannon Schartz said he does to get his JV some varsity experience.
“We’ve been doing this for four or five years now,” Schartz said. “It’s nice to get our junior varsity team some experience, and they did improve.”
The Lady Panthers weren’t able to secure a match.
“It went about like we expected,” Schartz said. “We didn’t win a match, but the important thing is the girls got better as the meet went on. They kept improving, which is what we wanted to see.”
