TOPEKA — Great Bend’s girls built a 17-point lead before holding off Kansas City Sumner’s 28-point fourth-quarter rally for a 69-64 victory Thursday in the Capital Basketball Classic.
The Panthers’ terrific trio of Carley Brack (19), Carly Dreiling (16) and Camryn Dunekack (16) supplied plenty of offensive firepower to hold off the Sabres’ rally.
Dunekack converted two free throws to extend a 67-64 lead after 3-pointers by Sabres Mya Allen and Olivia Garvin sliced the margin. The Panthers were ahead by eight points with a minute left.
Great Bend (8-2) will play No. 2 ranked Class 5A Leavenworth (10-1) in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinals at Washburn Rural High School. The Pioneers finished as 5A state runner-up last year.
The Panthers built a 12-point first-half lead before the Sabres closed the half on a scoring run.
Great Bend built a 49-32 lead keyed by a 17-4 run just as the third quarter was winding down. Brack, Dreiling and Dunekack combined for 17 third-quarter points.
The Sabres scored 32 points in the final 8:30 after scoring 32 points in the opening 23:30. Most of the Sabres’ damage was created by converting 29 Panther turnovers into transition points.
