Great Bend Middle School volleyball places second

DODGE CITY — The Great Bend Middle School volleyball team placed second with a 4-1 record at the Dodge City Middle School Volleyball Tournament. The middle school team was forced to overcome some injuries and illness.
After beating Dodge City Comanche, 15-10, 15-9; Great bend defeated Pratt 13-15, 15-9, 15-12; Dodge City Middle School, 15-10, 15-10 and Holcomb 15-12, 15-9.
In another marathon match, the Lady Panthers fell to Garden City Horace Good 12-15, 15-11, 17-19.
“Every time we play, I know it’s going to be a fight,” said Great bend coach Michelle Barber. “So far we haven’t been able to finish a match, but I know these girls have it in them to beat Horace Good. Moving players to new positions last minute is not an ideal situation, but these girls just keep surprising me.”
Zoe Jerke contributed 21 aces and 46 assists. Rachel Panzer delivered 14 kills and 10 digs. Lexi Deines contributed 13 kills. Emma Wasinger and Sydney Unruh each had 10 kills.
The Panthers (16-3) have lost three times to Garden City Horace Good.
The Great Bend B team (14-5) posted a 4-1 day on Saturday beating DC Comanche 15-10, 15-11; Pratt 15-11, 15-12, DC Middle School 15-6, 15-5; Holcomb 15-7, 15-4 before once again falling to GC Horace Good 4-15, 7-15.
“The girls played consistently all day. We seem to have a mental block when it comes to Horace Good.” said coach Morgan Hoffman.
