The 2015 WAC champion Great Bend softball team will take on Emporia at 4:30 p.m. in the second round of the Region 1 tournament Tuesday, May 19. The Great Bend Sports Complex will be the venue for this year’s regional. The Great Bend vs. Emporia matchup will follow the tournament opener between Wichita Heights and Maize South at 3 p.m. The championship game will take place at or around 6 p.m. that evening at GBSC.
The Panthers, 18-2, enter this year’s regional as the No.1 seed while Emporia is listed as the eighth seed at 3-17. Wichita Heights (9-11) is the fourth seed while Maize South (8-12) comes in as the fifth seed.
In Region 2 host Valley Center (12-5, second seed) will take on seventh seed Newton (4-14) at 4:30 preceded by Salina South (10-8, third seed) and Salina Central (6-14. sixth seed) at 3 p.m. The Region 2 championship will be held at or around 6 p.m.
Meanwhile, the baseball Panthers (9-9) will represent the fifth seed in Region 1 as they face Salina South (14-6, fourth seed) at 2 p.m. Tuesday. First seed Maize South, 15-5, will host the Region 1 tournament and will face Valley Center (6-11) at 3:45 p.m. with the Region 1 championship game to follow at 5:30 p.m.
In Region 2, second seed and host team Newton (13-5) will battle seventh seed Emporia (8-12) at 3:45 with the championship following at 5:30 p.m. Third seed Wichita-Heights (14-6) will start the day against Salina Central in a 2 p.m. contest. The Region 2 championship game will also take place at 5:30 p.m.
