GARDEN CITY – Great Bend’s Gage Fritz (20-4, 145) and Keaton Sander (26-3, 138) both placed third in the Rocky Welton Wrestling Invitational, one of the state’s toughest meets of the season.
Fritz finished with a 5-1 record and beat Ben Rodriguez of Scottsbluff, Neb. 12-6 for third place. Sander four of five matches and defeated Alex Abeyta of Santa Fe, N.M. 4-2 for third place.
Drew Liles (20-7, 106) placed ninth. Eric Vazquez (16-10, 120) placed 15th. Conrad Montoya (11-4, 132) finished 13th.

The Panthers finished the final round with a 6-0 record after three wrestklers were eliminated in earlier rounds.

"For how tough the tournament was, I was very happy with how we competed," said Great Bend coach Nathan Broeckelman. "We ended the placing round going 6-0.  We saw lots of little mistakes that we will fix before regionals to get ready to end the season at the state tournament.

The first day of wrestling at the Rocky Welton Invitational was a challenge. 

"We had three of nine wrestlers make it to the quarterfinals with only Keaton Sander advancing to the semifinals to secure a place on day one," said Broeckelman. "The second day was much better."
