LARNED – The No. 10 ranked 3A Halstead girls used a statement-making 13-0 first-quarter lead to post a 34-20 Central Kansas League victory over Larned Friday.
It was a game of streaks as Halstead won the first quarter, 13-0, Larned the second 9-2, Halstead the third 13-2 and Larned the fourth and final quarter, 9-6.
Larned’s inability to score much in the first and third quarters doomed their chances.
Neither team shot the ball well with Larned finishing 7 of 34 for 22 percent. Halstead 14 of 36 for 31 percent, but the taller Dragons dominated the rebounding and took advantage of numerous second-chance opportunities.
Baylea Perez produced 10 points. Lynzi Myrick and Katie Fischer added four apiece. Larned converted 3 of 10 free throws and shot 22 percent. Larned (2-13, 0-6 CKL) travel to Hoisington (6-9, 2-3 CKL) Tuesday.
“We shot the ball poorly and, other than Baylea Perez, nobody stepped up in the scoring column,” said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. “We’ve got to get more confidence, more production.”
Halstead led at halftime 15-9 in the low-scoring game. Karenna Gerber added a strong floor game along with dominance on the boards. The Dragons (14-1, 4-1 CKL) play CKL leader Kingman (13-2, 5-0 CKL) Tuesday.
Kayla Newman led Halstead with 12 points and Daphne Williams added eight points.
