LIBERAL — The Great Bend High School had one boys’ golfer qualify for the Class 5A state meet, which will be held on Monday, May 20, at Overland Park’s Brookridge Golf & Fitness.
Junior Chance Haney led the Panthers, carding an 83 to qualify as an individual at Liberal’s Willow Tree Golf Course on Monday.
“It feels pretty good,” Haney said. “Last year, I missed it by two strokes, so it kind of feels like I’m getting some redemption.”
Haney finished with a 44 after the first nine holes. He got himself back into contention with a 39 to finish the 18-hole round.
“I was pretty surprised,” Haney said. “I started off not too great, but I pulled it together in the back nine. I was pretty pumped.
“I knew I had to at least shoot under 40 on the back nine to be close.”
Great Bend took fourth place with a 339, missing third-place Goddard-Eisenhower by 22 strokes.
“We played all right,” GBHS head coach Troy Stein said. “Just like any tournament, there were strokes here and there that we’d like back, but all-in-all, I thought we did all right.”
The top 3 teams qualify for the state meet.
Hays won the meet, combining for a 311. Salina Central finished second with 317.
Seniors Wyatt Bayless and Matt Marshall each shot an 85, and fellow senior Tanner Neeland, who qualified for the state meet last season, finished with an 86.
“I think Wyatt and Matt were pretty happy,” Stein said. “They played about as well as they could’ve. Tanner was disappointed. He shot a 79 last week at the same course. The back nine cost him a few strokes.”
Cole Mulch hit an 87, and Kory Walters carded a 92.

This year, Ellinwood finished runner-up at 332, taking home some hardware — along with qualifying for Monday’s 2A state meet, which will be held at Dodge City’s Mariah Hills Golf Course.
Jared Oelke hit a 76, and beat out teammate Ryley Ney, who took fourth place, for third in a tiebreaker.
Gavin Vink carded an 86, taking eighth place.
Tyler Capps finished with 94, Trey Mosier carded a 103 and Allex Kowalsky shot a 111.
