HOISINGTON — Tailback Hunter Hanzlick scored four second-half touchdowns and rushed for 182 yards to spark unbeaten Hoisington past Washington County 50-6 in the Class 3A second round.
The Cardinals rushed for 355 yards and added 38 yards passing. Zade Sanders rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cardinals (11-0) will play at Halstead (11-0) next week in the Class 3A semifinals. The Cardinals have also reached the quarterfinal round in 2007 and 1990.
The Cardinals recovered an opening fumble and Tyler Specht scored on a 1-yard run. Hunter Kier scored a touchdown for the Tigers (10-1) for a 6-6 tie.
Hoisington scored the next 44 points over the next three quarters to dominate both sides of the football. Sanders scored on rushing touchdowns of 2 and 15 yards for a 22-6 halftime lead.
Hanzlick dominated the second half with second-half touchdown runs of 1, 11, 14 and 26 yards. The Cardinals limited the Tigers to 109 yards rushing and 38 yards passing. The Cardinals stopped the Tigers on several short-yardage situations to control the ballgame.
"We played even harder and stepped it up. Our guys were phenomenal. I was extremely proud of our defense and special teams holding those guys to six points," said Hoisington coach Zach Baird. "They had some great athletes and some big kids."
Baird said Sanders' effort was a big boost.
"You could not find a better kid to coach than Zade Sanders. He's all about his team," Baird said. "He continues to get better because he works all the time. I'm proud of him."
About the only negative was the number of penalty flags thrown against the Cardinals.
