NEWTON— For the third year in his Great Bend career, Grant Harris will be making a trip to the state tennis tournament. For several weeks the Panther senior has been battling tendonitis but it never proved to be an issue at Monday’s regional tournament in Newton.
Harris began the day with a 6-0, 6-0 sweeping of Liberal’s Johnny Tran. Harris, who was playing as a fifth seed, defeated fourth-seeded Kerry Dunn of Wichita Heights by scores of 6-4 and 6-0 earning his trip to Goddard where he will begin play Friday morning.
“Grant defaulted in the third and fourth match,” said coach Barbara Harris. “With his tendonitis and regional being pushed back into the week of state, he needed to save his arm.”
In other regional competition, Aron Rodriguez fell 6-0 and 6-1 to Ray Strunk of Valley Center.
In doubles, Den Diel and Ozioma Ofoma dropped 6-0 and 6-0 decisions to Mitchell Irby and Buddy Buchanan of Liberal. Marcos Cerda injured his foot during his first match playing with Santiago Talamantes leading to a default.
