LARNED — The Larned boys jumped out to a 20-10 first-quarter Monday evening, but couldn’t make it hold up as they scored only 16 more points in the remaining three quarters as the Hoisington Cardinals battled back to take a first-round Keady Classic victory, 43-36.
Larned went on a 13-3 run in building their lead.
Larned shredded the Cardinals’ man-to-man defense in the first quarter but in the second, Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton shifted his team to a trapping 1-3-1 zone that Larned never solved.
The Indians would score five points in the second and third quarters as the Cardinals kept edging closer.
Finally, about midway through the fourth quarter, the Cardinals took the lead on a layup by Cameron Davis and a 34-32 lead that they would not relinquish. Hoisington put together an 18-2 run to take control of the game.
Larned coach Jerrod Smith said, “We never solved their zone defense. Credit coach Haxton for making the move. We forced them out of their man-to-man, but we just couldn’t hit an outside shot.”
Cold shooting plagued both Hoisington and Larned. The Cardinals shot 30 percent on 15 of 51 field goals while the Indians shot 27 percent on 12 of 44 attempts.
Hoisington was led in scoring by freshman Alex Schremmer with 13 points. Brenner Donovan added 10 points. Larned’s Jonathan Herter scored nine points and Thomas Harmon added eight and Nick Orth seven.
Hoisington advances in the Keady Basketball Classic Winners Bracket to a 7:15 p.m. game Friday evening against Spearville, a 48-38 winner over Ellinwood.
Larned plays in the consolation bracket at 7:15 p.m. Thursday against Ellinwood, which lost 48-38 to state-ranked Spearville.
• SPEARVILLE 48, ELLINWOOD 38 — Kyler Stein scored 14 points and Luke Heskamp scored 10 points as Spearville beat Ellinwood 48-38 in the opening round. Ellinwood’s Nathan Monday and Myles Menges each scored nine points.
