LARNED — The Hoisington High School girls’ basketball team cruised to a 52-37 win over Spearville in the championship game of the Keady Basketball Classic on Saturday night in Larned.
According to the final score, anyway.
The Lady Cardinals outscored Spearville 21-5 in the fourth quarter to spread the margin, which was only 32-31 after the first three periods.
Savannah Rose led Hoisington with 20 points, stepping up to cover to the Lady Cardinals usual points-leader Mallory Flagor, who was the focus of the Spearville defense.
“Savannah just did a good job all around,” Hoisington head coach Mandy Mason said. “She did a good job getting offensive boards and put backs. She was able to take several second-chance shots for us. She plays with a lot of confidence.
“They were really focusing Mallory. They came out in a zone and put two on her most of the game.”
Belle Brickley, who has stepped in for the injured point guard Jordin Greer, finished with 14 points.
“She’s handled it really well,” Mason said of Brickley’s taking on a new position. “She gets down on herself sometimes so we have to remind her that she’s got to shake things off. She can just get herself some good scoring opportunities.”
Brickley was 8-for-10 from the free throw line.
This is the fifth year that Larned has hosted the Keady Basketball Classic. The Hoisington girls have won four of them now, having lost last year to Macksville.
“This was a huge tournament for us,” Mason said. “Especially after finding out that we were playing without Jordin. I think the kids really needed to see that they could step up and fight to win. They handled it very well.”
