HAYS — Hoisington High brought home a Class 3-1A state trophy, but the runner-up trophy with 113 points came up second behind five-time champion Norton with 126 points.
Hoisington High’s brother tandem of Christopher Ball (152) and Jonathan Ball (145) joined their older brother Brandon Ball, a four-time state champion, as Class 3-1A state wrestling champions with back-to-back titles Saturday.
“It’s so razor-thin. It could’ve been us,” said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt. “We had our chances. I’m disappointed we did not win. We feel good about what we happened. We finished the tournament strong.”
The Ball brothers accomplished what Schmidt had hoped with state titles.
• Jon Ball (42-0, 145) cruised past Smith Center’s Colton Hutchinson 11-2 in the finals. He missed last season with a shoulder injury after placing as state runner-up two years ago.
• Chris Ball (39-2, 152) pinned Norton’s Trenton Wright in 1:31 to complete back-to-back titles in the 152-pound division.
“It’s something that we felt we could do,” Schmidt said.
• Cardinal Tanner Cassity (35-7, 132), Sean Urban (38-4, 160), Justin Bradley (33-6, 220) and Landen Urban (285) all earned state medals.
• Landen Urban placed third with dominating pin over Daylan Fell of Bluestem in 50 seconds for third place.
• No. 5-ranked Justin Bradley placed fifth with a 6-3 win over Royal Valley’s Blake Garrison.
• No. 5 ranked Sean Urban placed fifth with a 9-3 victory over Atwood’s Maverick Green.
• Tanner Cassity placed sixth with a 3-2 loss to Fredonia’s Nick Voth.
• Wyatt Pedigo (33-9, 170) was eliminated by Hill City’s Gabe Hamel 7-6 in a last-second loss.
“We had a tough break at 170,” Schmidt said. “We thought we had a match won, but it slipped away on a reversed call. Wyatt has some great moments ahead of him in his career.”
The Cardinals graduate seniors Jon Ball, Justin Bradley, Landen Urban, state-qualifier Dylan Carrier (120), Brinttain Noah (160), Jeremy Breit (170) and Ben Schneider (195).
“We return three regional champions and a regional runner-up. This senior class has been a big contributor. They are good kids. Even the seniors who didn’t wrestle wrestler never quit wrestling and they made us a better team by being there.”
Norton featured three state champions — Ryan Johnson (120), Jacob Green (220) and Collyn Auker (285).
“Norton has set an unbelievable standard,” Schmidt said. “Until someone knocks them off, they’re the team to beat. It’s a great run. They get their kids ready.”
