HAYS — Hoisington’s Ball brothers got off to a rousing start in the Class 3-1A state wrestling championship. Now, they just want to realize Kansas state wrestling history.
The trio of Ball brothers — three-time state champion Brandon Ball, Jonathan Ball and Christopher Ball — all won three matches to qualify for the Class 3-1A state finals Saturday night. No trio of brothers have ever won state wrestling titles in the same year.

No. 3 Landen Urban (285) qualified as Hoisington’s fourth semifinal qualifier with two wins, but lost in the semifinals.
No. 2 ranked Brandon Ball, a three-time Class 3-1A state wrestling champion,  pinned Riley County’s Wes March in 2:11 in his first 138-pound match Friday at Fort Hays State University.  He defeated Hill City’s Gabe Hamel (27-13) 6-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Ball beat Rossville’s No. 5 ranked Isaiah Luellen (29-7), 9-1.
His brothers also won first and second-round matches to reach the semifinals. Seven Cardinals won first-round matches.
No. 3 Jonathan Ball (145) defeated Cherryvale’s Alex Van Rooy, 15-0.  Ball (43-1) defeated Scott City’s James Jurgens (36-10) 3-2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Ball upset Caney Valley’s No. 2 ranked Colton Stalford (45-4), 2-1 in overtime.
No. 6 Christopher Ball (152) pinned Plainville’s Trevor Houser in 3:28. Ball (38-6) defeated Marysville’s Jacob Mintzmyer (30-9), 13-4. Ball upset Silver Lake’s No. 2 ranked Hunter Howerton (35-8) in the semifinals with a pin in 1:12.
No. 3 Landen Urban (285) defeated Eureka’s Grayson Pryce, 7-5.  In the quarterfinals, Urban (36-6) pinned Scott City’s Lane Hayes (28-14) in 1:58;  Urban faces No. 1 ranked Jaden Helms (37-0) of Chaparral High School.
No. 6 Chance Boor (195) defeated Caney Valley’s Wyatt Anderson, 10-2.  Boor lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to No. 1 ranked Tristan Speer (22-0) of Troy High School in the quarterfinals.
Hoisington’s Hunter Hanzlick (170) pulled the biggest surprise with a 7-4 upset victory over No. 6 Effingham’s Joey Landwehr. No. 6 Kendall Miller (24-10) Norton defeated Hunter Hanzlick (32-14), 11-4 in the quarterfinals.
Tanner Cassity (113) pinned Sublette’s Alex Depperschmidt in 2:55. Rossville’s Bryce Gfeller defeated Cassity 14-3 in the quarterfinals.
Hoisington’s Sean Urban (160) and Austin McHenry (182) and Justin Bradley (220) lost first-round matches. McHenry’s loss was a heartbreaker, a 3-2 decision to Onaga’s Kyle Amos (40-4).
