Indians split baseball doubleheader

LARNED — Two-time Central Kansas League baseball champion Larned split Tuesday’s doubleheader with Nickerson, winning the opener 4-2, but losing the second game 13-4.
Larned (5-5) plays Halstead at home Thursday and Nickerson (7-1) plays Hoisington (6-2) at home.
LARNED 4, PANTHERS 2 — Larned pitcher Gage Skelton earned the victory with seven solid innings with four strikeouts. The Indians scored two runs on double steals.
Nickerson rallied in the seventh inning when Kaleb Jackson singled, but he was caught stealing by catcher Jordan Taylor. Kolbi Schrag doubled and Stewart singled, but Gage Skelton retired Austin Engelland to end the threat.
After trailing 2-0, Larned’s Mason Schartz reached on a third-inning error and scored on a steal as Dalton Bright was thrown out at second base. Carson Smith’s fourth-inning double drove home Austin Gladow for a 2-2 tie. Carson Smith scored on a double steal with Mason Schartz for a 3-2 lead.
Mason Burris singled home Jonathan Herter in the fifth inning for a 4-2 lead.
Braden Stewart’s single drove home Kaleb Jackson and Josh Salazar in the third inning after back-to-back singles and a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
PANTHERS 13, INDIANS 4 — The Panthers scored eight runs in the sixth inning after trailing 4-3. Kolbi Schrag drove home four runs with five singles to highlight a 13-hit attack.
Larned managed four runs. but yielded 13 runs and 13 hits. Jonathan Herter scored on a double steal as Alex Barger was thrown out at second base in the third inning. Taylor’s RBI single scored Herter to spark a three-run fourth inning. Gladow’s double scored Barger and Taylor for a 4-3 lead.
Chandler Eaton’s single scored Engelland for a 1-0 lead. Kolbi Schrag’s single scored Jackson and Salazar scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead. Kolbi Schrag’s RBI single drove home Salazar for a 4-4 tie after five innings.
Eaton scored on an error and Salazar’s RBI single scored Tre Garcia for a 6-4 lead. Kolbi Schrag’s single scored Tanner Schrag. Stewart and Engelland forced home runs on a walk and hit batter. Eaton and Kolbi Schrag delivered RBI singles to finish off the eight-run inning.
