HOISINGTON — Three things put the Ellinwood High School girls’ basketball team behind early against Hoisington on Friday night — turnovers, offensive rebounds and 3-pointers.
The Lady Cardinals sank 6 of 9 3-pointers in the first half, and beat the Lady Eagles 55-26 at the Hoisington Activity Center in Mid-Central Activities Association action.
“We came out and we were just hitting everything tonight,” Hoisington head coach Mandy Mason said. “Jordin hit some great shots. Blakelee hit some shots, and of course, then you’ve got our bigs inside who are pretty active on the boards. They shoot a high percentage when they are inside. It was a great night shooting for us.”
Hoisington got started immediately with sophomore point guard Jordin Greer hitting a 3 to begin a 20-3 run that lasted the entire first quarter. Greer capped the run with two points to close out the opening period.
In between, Savannah Rose scored six points, Blakelee Cooper sank a pair of 3s, Mallory Flagor scored two points and Breanna Burns made the first of two free throws.
“They shot lights out in the first half,” Ellinwood head coach Ryan Mountain said. “What do you do? We did switch up to zone. We started in man-to-man and then we doubled up on Flagor. I don’t think she hurt us in the first half. I think she only had two points.
“But when she did get off to a good start, getting her first two, we went to zone. Then Jordin hit a 3. Cooper hit a couple. Then Jordin hit another couple. What do you do?”
Rose finished with 18 points for the Lady Cardinals.
Ellinwood had 10 turnovers in the first half, and struggled rebounding the ball against Flagor and Rose, both 5-foot-11 post players.
“I thought that we really struggled the last time we played them at keeping them off the boards, so that was our main focus tonight,” Mason said. “The last two days of practice, we have been really stressing to our girls how important it is to really limit their opportunities to score and to keep them off the glass.
“I thought our bigs, I think we just dominated the boards.”
Ellinwood started the second quarter getting two points from Sophia Hayes, and Kelsey Ward followed that by making a pair of free throws, but Greer went on a tear to close out the half, scoring 13 points in the final five minutes, including a trio of 3-pointers.
“She wasn’t real happy with her shot the last couple of games, so she’s been putting in some extra time lately after practice,” Mason said of Greer. “It definitely showed up tonight. She was shooting the ball with confidence. She’s capable of doing that.”
Greer finished with a game-high 19 points.
The Lady Cardinals finished the first half with a 37-9 lead.
Ward finished with eight points to lead the Lady Eagles.
