WICHITA — It was an historic weekend for the Ellinwood High School girls’ track and field team.
Over the two-day Class 6-1A State Track and Field Championships in Wichita, the Lady Eagles snapped four school records and came away with hardware for the second time in school history.
“Any time you get a trophy at a state meet, it was a good meet,” Ellinwood head coach Lyles Lashley said. “This was the first trophy for Ellinwood since 1983 and the second in school history. We took second place.”
There was also a pair of state titles won.
Sophie Hayes, who was a part of all four broken school records, won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.66 seconds, a school record set in 1983.
Hayes also won a medal in the 100 hurdles, breaking her own record with a time of 15.57 seconds. She also placed sixth in the 200 dash at 27.13.

“It all starts with our senior leadership,” Lashley said. “Panning and Hayes are our go-to runners. They really help motivate the rest of the team. Hayes ran eight races in two days. They just push everyone so hard.”
