ST. JOHN — It was a back-and-forth struggle for the Central Plains High School girls’ basketball team on Friday night.
The Lady Oilers outscored St. John-Hudson 10-8 in the final quarter to win 37-36.
The two teams played to an 8-8 stalemate in the first quarter, but Central Plains, which is ranked No. 7 in Class 2A in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll, unleashed 14 points to lead 22-13 heading into intermission.
The Lady Tigers, who are ranked No. 3 in 1A Division-I, battled back with 15 points in the third quarter to lead 28-27 with eight minutes remaining.
Janae Hekele led the Lady Oilers (14-2) with 15 points. Taylor Rolfs added a season-high 13 points.
Both players went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Morgan Osborne recorded a double-double for St. John (13-2), scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Mindy Wood led the Lady Mustangs (3-10) with 12 points, going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.
Tara Bunker added 11 points, and Melissa Espino scored 10.

ST. JOHN — St. John didn’t get off to a great start, but a 21-7 second quarter led the Tigers to a win over Central Plains.
The Tigers, who are ranked No. 1 in 1A D-I, was led by Dean Wade and Spencer Nusser. Both players finished with 18 points.
Nusser also grabbed nine rebounds, and Wade finished with seven.
Zuriel Reyes added 11 points for St. John (15-0).
Braeden Crites led Central Plains (8-8) with 13 points and eight rebounds.
