Lady Panthers pick up seasons first win

DODGE CITY — The Great Bend High School volleyball team improved to 2-3 on the season after going 2-1 at the Dodge City quadrangular on Tuesday.The Lady Panthers dropped their first match against Spearville, but rallied to beat South Central and Dodge City.Spearville topped Great Bend 29-27 and 25-15.“Against Spearville, we played pretty passive,” GBHS head coach Kelsey Perry said. “We just wanted to wait on them to make a mistake rather than being aggressive.”Great Bend’s Braylin Bretz and Regan Unruh each had a team-leading six kills against Spearville.Unruh also led her team with five digs.The Lady Panthers found their footing against South Central, winning 25-13 and 25-23.“Against South Central, we started to find some comfort on the court and some chemistry,” Perry said. “You could tell the girls were beginning to adjust to the faster pace and we had some kids start to step up and take control.“Getting that first win can really build confidence for all the players.”Brittnee Barber finished with 17 assists against South Central.Lindsay Leuenburger had 10 digs, and Morgan Kottas recorded eight kills.Against their Western Athletic Conference foe, the Lady Panthers managed to win 25-14 and 25-21.“We continued that (confidence) into the final match against Dodge City,” Perry said.
