TOPEKA — With a 12th-place finish, the Great Bend High School Lady Panthers did something no other swim team has done at the Class 5-1A state swimming championships.
It was the highest any girls’ team from Great Bend has finished at state.
“I couldn’t have been more pleased,” GBHS head coach Steve Beaumont said. “The kids competed well. It is a big meet, and there is a lot of pressure. Part of being able to compete is learning to deal with the hype, and I think these kids did well.”
Hannah Hildebrand, who was a second-team all-state selection, made it through to the finals on Friday in both of her individual events.
Hildebrand eighth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.61 seconds. She took fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.01.
Hildebrand set a school record in the butterfly in the preliminaries, clocking in at 1:00.36. She beat Jessica Brozek’s record of 1:01.27, which was set in 2005.
“She definitely swam her best races on Thursday,” Beaumont said. “In the 50 free, she swam the second-fastest time in school history and knocked off a second from her entry time.”
Great Bend’s 400 freestyle relay team, consisting of Allison Damm, Kylee Spray, Michaela Cape and Hildebrand, took seventh place with a time of 4:02.92.
“We got ahead of Salina Central in the final turn,” Beaumont said. “It was definitely an exciting way to finish the meet.”
In the 200 medley relay, the Lady Panthers advanced to the consolation finals. Cape, Brianna Schartz, Hildebrand and Spray combined for an 11th-place finish, clocking in at 2:04.06.
